How and when to graft trees
Even though it is a kind of intervention in nature within agricultural activities, we defend tree grafting in a friendly manner.
It is done before the trees wake up from their winter sleep (before the water begins to flow inside the trees). However, if the cutting is prepared before it buds and kept in the cold (for example, the refrigerator) for a while, the graft can be made in the first days of spring.
In general, it is done for two different results:
- Grafting modern species into a wild fruit tree.
- Grafting native species onto a modern species tree.
We especially prefer the second option. Why are local fruit trees important?
- climate change,
- Risks in water capacity
- Extremes in weather conditions
- External input costs
- Healthy product supply
Local species are resistant to climate changes and harsh conditions. It requires less water and is much more resistant to diseases and pests.
In the split graft above, the reason why the section is cut at an angle is to prevent water from remaining on it (which could enter the slot and create a risk of cracking) in case of a possible frost event.
